From the Chihuahua desert in Mexico, this stone is a rare form of jasper. These pieces came from Scott, the owner's, grand parents collection, undoubtedly picked for their uniqueness during their travels around the world. A beautiful stone with lots of variation. Hand shaped and polished in our lapidary in Moab, UT. Includes dogbane cord crafted in house.

We hand make the cord for our pendants from the Dogbane Plant (Apocynum Cannabium). It is a relative of the Milkweed Plant and is found locally in the wetlands and sloughs of Moab, UT and beyond. In the fall when it dies we harvest the stalks, strip the fibers and twist it into the cord you find in our store.

We use the reverse wrap technique, the same technique that has been used for thousands of years by indigenous people all over the world. Local tribes used it in the most demanding of applications. Well preserved remnants of traplines, clothing and shoes, bags and purses, mats and equipment have been found in ruins and huts all over the Four Corners region.

Dogbane is durable yet soft. We work the fibers when wet, hand rub them for smoothness and twist to the perfect length. Dogbane cord is stiff when first made but with use becomes soft and pliable. This cord is of the land and naturally holds up to the test of time. With care your cord may become an archaeological find 1000 years from now.
